News Note: All about Institutional Operational Levels


So how are the federal prisons doing, COVID-wise? As you can see the number of currently infected inmates has plummeted, with inmate numbers below 100 for the entire federal system and staff infections at the mid-100 level.


The BOP assigns to each prison institution operational levels (Level 1, Level 2, or Level 3), based on the facilities’ COVID-19 medical isolation rate, combined percentage of staff and inmate completed vaccinations series and their respective county transmission rates. As of Sunday morning, there were 59 federal prisons nationally at Level 1 (the lowest), 23 were at Level 2 and 16 were at Level 3.


Level Indicators -- BOP COVID-19 Operational Levels are raised or lowered after 48 hours of respective sustained increases or decreases in the following indicators:
